Posted by John Taylor on July 31, 2010 4:33 PM ET
Unfortunately for Miami, they have (voluntarily) lost some experienced depth this afternoon. Fortunately for the Hurricanes, they lost it at arguably the deepest position on their roster.

Citing a source close to the situation, the Miami Herald is reporting that defensive end Steven Wesley has been dismissed from the football program. No specific reason was given for the senior’s dismissal, and a source would not confirm or deny that it was related to academics.

Wesley started six games in 2009 and played in a total of eleven. During his career with the Hurricanes, Wesley played in a total of 33 games.

While Allen Bailey and Adewale Ojomo will enter summer camp as the starters, Wesley was expected to once again be a part of their line rotation.

James Aiono, Snow College's highly touted defensive lineman who signed with the Utes and was expected in camp this week, won't join the team until January due to some remaining academic requirements he must meet, according to Utah coach Kyle Whittingham.

Aiono, a 6-foot-3, 280-pound All-American, was expected to contend for a starting role. He'll still have two years of eligibility remaining.

Two other JC transfers, receiver Ray Magee and defensive back Maxwell Lacy, are also finishing academic work and won't be with the team when camp opens Wednesday but are expected to join the team for the 2009 season.

2008-08-21Trailer_TrashMWCNuisanceCrime Link6The NCAA put the New Mexico program on three years of probation Wednesday and cut five scholarships as punishment for academic violations involving two former assistant coaches.

The sanctions imposed by the NCAA’s infractions committee went beyond the university’s self-imposed penalties, which included two years of probation and fewer scholarship reductions.

New Mexico’s head coach Rocky Long was not accused of any wrongdoing in the case.

The NCAA concluded that the former Lobos assistants in 2004 improperly helped three recruits to obtain fraudulent academic credits through correspondence courses they never completed at Fresno Pacific University, a fully accredited, four-year college in California that also offers online degrees.

In its report, the infractions committee said course registration materials at Fresno Pacific showed the home addresses for the three UNM recruits as the home address in California of a brother of one former assistant. Coaches’ office or cell phone numbers were listed as the recruits’ phone numbers. The recruits admitted to NCAA investigators that they "received no course materials and did no work" but received course credit.

The recruits took courses from a Fresno Pacific instructor who was an acquaintance of one of the former UNM assistants.

At a news conference, athletic director Paul Krebs said the university fully cooperated with the NCAA during the probe.

"I do think there is some relief that comes with the filing of the report. It allows us to bring closure to what is a sad and embarassing situation for the university," Krebs said.

Long said the penalities will force his program to be more selective in its recruiting. He said he also would keep a tighter rein on his assistants.

Of the two assistants, Long said: "When they’re out on the road themselves and doing this sort of thing, they’re trying to recruit the best they can. Sometimes you lose sight of what’s important. I think they’re two great guys who made some serious mistakes."

The infractions committee pointed out that New Mexico was the third school that had major rules violations involving courses from Fresno Pacific.

"All institutions are cautioned that due diligence must be exercised prior to accepting courses from Fresno Pacific for academic credit and athletic eligibility purposes," the committee said in its report.

Sanctions also were imposed on the former assistants in their recruiting and coaching activities at any school where they work. The NCAA did not identify the assistants in the infractions committee’s report.

The NCAA has accused Texas A&M-Corpus Christi of nine rules violations, including use of ineligible players, recruiting violations in men’s basketball and lack of institutional control.

The alleged violations, eight of them major, occurred mainly between 2004 and 2008 in men’s basketball, women’s volleyball and men’s tennis.

The NCAA’s notice of allegations, obtained Saturday by the Associated Press, also accuses athletic director Brian Teter of not reporting to the NCAA his knowledge of two ineligible players and later submitting a false self-report regarding one of those players. Teter failed to conduct himself in accordance with the association’s "high standards of honesty and sportsmanship," the notice said.

The NCAA charged the athletic department with a lack of institutional control, saying the school failed to monitor the eligibility of student-athletes, properly train staff in NCAA rules, police itself for rules violations and accurately report any violations.

The school has to respond to the allegations by Oct. 29 and is scheduled to appear before the NCAA infractions committee on Dec. 5 in Indianapolis.

In a statement, school President Flavius Killebrew said he does not want the school or its athletic department, which started in 1998, to be tarnished by the allegations.

"We take the issues presented to us by the NCAA very seriously," Killebrew said. "Our intercollegiate athletic program must be transparent beyond any reproach."

The report singles out two former compliance directors and Teter for failing to report ineligible players once they learned of them or for failing to withhold them from competition. A volleyball player was improperly given a sixth year of eligibility and a men’s tennis player was given a partial athletic scholarship when he had not qualified academically and was later allowed to compete even after officials knew he was ineligible, according to the NCAA.

Teter did not immediately respond to an e-mail or a phone message left at his office by the Associated Press on Saturday. School spokesman Marshall Collins said Teter remains the athletic director and that Killebrew will ultimately decide his job status. The school received notice of the allegations Thursday, and the president has not decided a course of action, Collins said.

"He hasn’t had time himself to read to see if there’s anything that should be done at this time," Collins said.

The men’s basketball program, led by former Miami coach Perry Clark, is also a target of the report. The NCAA alleges an assistant coach made at least 43 impermissible phone calls to four recruits. A separate allegation involves the program providing impermissible recruiting inducements to a possible transfer, including transportation to the border town of Laredo so the player could renew his immigration documentation.

Included among the allegations is a secondary violation involving men’s basketball, in which the NCAA said Teter told Clark to use personal funds for recruiting and not program funds.

2008-05-26Trailer_TrashIndependentsNuisanceCrime Link1North Dakota star running back Ryan Chappell is academically ineligible to play this season, the first for the school at Division I.

UND football coach Chris Mussman said Tuesday that Chappell will remain on the team. He was to begin his junior season this fall.

Chappell was UND's leading rusher last season, gaining 1,640 yards and scoring 14 touchdowns. He averaged 136 rushing yards a game and caught 22 passes for 370 yards.

He set UND's single-game rushing record last September by gaining 306 yards against Central Washington.

"The big thing is we have to play with the guys who do it the right way, on the field, off the field and in the classroom," Mussman said. "The integrity of the program is the most important thing. We'll win and lose with kids who do things the right way."

Chappell will have one season of eligibility remaining.
