2010-06-09IrvinSucksSeahawksNuisanceCrime Link2RENTON, Wash. -- Seahawks rookie wide receiver Golden Tate apologized Tuesday and said he was "very embarrassed" after police in suburban Seattle gave him a warning for trespassing into a gourmet doughnut shop at 3 a.m. last weekend.

"Freshly baked. I made the mistake of -- a buddy made the mistake going in grabbing a couple. We ate them," the former Notre Dame star said after an organized team activity. "This is the wrong type of media I want to bring to the organization."

He also called the incident a "foolish mistake."

"But," he added, "if you ever want maple bars, that's the place to go."

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said he has already spoken with Tate about the incident.

"No, I'm not disappointed at a guy being at a doughnut shop at 3 in the morning when they got maple bars like Top Pot has," Carroll deadpanned.

"However, under the circumstances, I think they were closed or something like that, trying to close, or whatever," the coach said. "That's definitely wrong. We've talked about it, addressed it. He's remorseful and all that. I do understand the lure of the maple bars."

Griffin apologizes for arrest
Last update: October 8, 2009 - 12:45 PM

It sounds like one of Chilly’s goofy philosophical nuggets: If a cornerback gets arrested for DUI and nobody notices, does it cause a distraction?

The answer, I believe, would be no.

I bring this up because, on Wednesday, WCCO reported that Vikings cornerback Cedric Griffin had been given two days of community service and ordered to pay court fees over an August arrest for drunken driving. An arrest that somehow managed to go unreported by the Twin Cities media.

Cedric, according to WCCO, was also given two years probation. It remains to be seen what penalty will be imposed on him by Roger Goodell, but a suspension could be in the offing.

Update: Cedric has apologized for his arrest. "I’m apologetic and I’m sorry about what happened," Griffin said. "I’m just trying to help my team win and continue to move forward from that incident."

Sorry. Wants to move forward. Is focused on winning. Yup, he hit them all

Locksley became angry, grabbed Gerald by the collar and punched him as other coaches tried to intervene.

Locksley didn't attend the news conference but issued a statement in which he acknowledged the incident. He said he apologized to Gerald, to the coaching staff and to the team.

"I would also like to apologize to Lobo fans," Locksley said. "Like I remind our players, when mistakes are made, you acknowledge them and deal with the consequences."

"I’ve apologized to my coaches and teammates for an unfortunate mistake," Blackstock said. 2008-08-06Trailer_TrashBrewersNuisanceCrime Link1Milwaukee first baseman Prince Fielder apologized Tuesday for pushing a teammate in the dugout during a loss, saying he should have done a better job of handling frustration due in part to the Brewers' losing streak.

Fielder exchanged words and twice shoved Manny Parra after the pitcher was removed for a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning of a 6-3 loss to the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night. The Brewers' seventh loss in nine games left them with only a half-game lead in the NL wild-card standings.

The 24-year-old Fielder was pulled away from Parra by several teammates, preventing the situation from escalating. He declined to talk about it after the game.

On Tuesday, he said there is no animosity toward Parra.

"It's not like we hate each other," Fielder said. "I don't. It's just a little disagreement. I apologize for the way it went down, but I don't apologize for the passion and intensity. And he wasn't eager to elaborate Friday on his experience as a three-time Pro Bowl linebacker serving a one-day sentence recently among other inmates at a jail near the team's headquarters.

"It was 24 hours, just like anyone else does if they have that offense," said Tatupu, who signed a six-year, $42 million contract extension in March, six weeks before Kirkland police arrested him.

He registered 0.155 and 0.158 in breath test readings, nearly twice the Washington state intoxication threshold of 0.08, according to an arrest report. He was also fined $1,255.

"I want to apologize ... to anyone I have let down, especially the kids out there. It's not the right thing to do. You shouldn't drink and drive," Tatupu said. "I'll never forget about it. 2008-04-20Trailer_TrashChargersNuisanceCrime Link2Chargers inside linebacker Stephen Cooper was suspended for four games by the NFL on Tuesday for testing positive for a banned stimulant.

Cooper, who moved into the starting lineup last season and led the Chargers with 179 tackles, said in a statement released by the team that he took a stimulant that was recently added to the NFL’s list of prohibited substances.

"I regret that I mistakenly took a stimulant that I did not realize at the time was banned by the NFL," Cooper said. "I support the NFL’s anti-doping policies, and understand that I must serve a suspension even though the stimulant that I took was not used before any game and was not used to enhance my performance.

"I apologize to the NFL, my team, my coaches and to my fans, and I look forward to continuing to help the Chargers toward our goal of winning the Super Bowl in the upcoming season."

Neither Cooper nor his agent could immediately be reached for further comment.

While at Maine, Cooper admitted to possession of steroids after being found with about 1,000 pills in his duffel bag when the driver of an SUV he was riding in was stopped for speeding in 2002.

Cooper, who pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor drug charge, said at the time that he never took the steroids, but had been planning to use them to bulk up in hopes of making the NFL.

It’s the second time since 2006 a Chargers linebacker has been suspended for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. Star outside linebacker Shawne Merriman served a four-game suspension in 2006 after testing positive for steroids.

General manager A.J. Smith said the suspension was "very disappointing."

"Coop has embarrassed himself, his family and the Chargers," Smith told The Associated Press. "He made a mistake. Some people learn from their mistakes, others do not. I do believe Stephen Cooper will learn from his and in a positive way. Only time will tell."

Smith said he didn’t know what stimulant Cooper tested positive for.

Cooper’s suspension begins on Saturday, Aug. 30 following the Chargers’ final exhibition game. He is eligible to return to the active roster on Monday, Sept. 29 following the team’s Sunday game against the Oakland Raiders.

Cooper can participate in the team’s offseason program and in all preseason practices and games.

"Obviously we’re disappointed, just as I know Stephen is," coach Norv Turner said in a statement. "Coop made a mistake and now must deal with the consequences. It’s unfortunate, but we’ll deal with it and move on."
2008-04-20Trailer_TrashDevil RaysNuisanceCrime Link2Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Al Reyes was shocked with a stun gun and arrested early Friday after police say he fell against a ceramic pot in a bar, got up and picked a fight with a man he thought pushed him.

The reliever apologized to teammates, fans and the entire Rays organization before Friday night's game against Baltimore, and manager Joe Maddon said the club was not planning any disciplinary action.

"I tried to have a good time on my birthday, but I guess it was the worst one," said Reyes, who was in uniform at Tropicana Field and available to pitch against the Orioles. "I just want to apologize again to my teammates, the whole organization ... for what happened last night."

Reyes, 0-1 with a 27.00 ERA in two appearances this season, did not take questions.

He was treated at the scene for a cut on his nose and was charged with being in a fight that disturbed the peace. Eduardo Mora was charged with battery. Both men were released on their own recognizance.

"It's just one of those unfortunate, isolated incidents. I don't really believe you're going to see that happen again with Al," Maddon said. "We're just going to move beyond it. It's just unfortunate that it occurred."

Witnesses told officers that Reyes, who turned 38 on Thursday, appeared to be intoxicated when he exchanged words with Mora, who punched the 6-foot-1, 240-pound pitcher in the face at the Hyde Park Cafe around 2:30 a.m.

A police statement said that when bouncers grabbed Mora, Reyes began spitting blood on patrons and swinging his arms. When the bouncers were unable to control Reyes, a police officer working extra duty at the club intervened, asking Reyes to stop.

When the pitcher "continued spitting blood and thrashing about," the officer told Reyes he was going to use his Taser, which knocked Reyes to the ground. He was shocked a second time after not complying with commands to stay down.

2008-02-08Trailer_TrashWest CoastNuisanceCrime Link1GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- University of North Dakota men’s hockey coach Dave Hakstol has been suspended for two games and reprimanded for profane language and a gesture he made at a referee during a heated Saturday night game with Minnesota.

During the second period of game, which ended in a 1-1 tie, a television camera showed Hakstol sticking up his middle finger at referee Don Adam after the two discussed a penalty call.

Acting University of North Dakota athletic directors Betty Ralston and Steve Brekke announced the suspension on Monday.

"We expect our coaches to keep themselves and their teams in control at all times," Ralston said. "Profane language and poor behavior on the part of our coaches and student-athletes is unacceptable."

The Sioux have this week off before playing host to Denver on Feb. 15-16. Hakstol will not coach the two-game series, UND said.

Western Collegiate Hockey Association Commissioner Bruce McLeod said Hakstol violated the league’s code of sportsmanlike conduct. The WCHA issued a reprimand to Hakstol on Monday and said it endorsed the UND suspension.

"We appreciate the rapid response and action taken by the University of North Dakota today and we are in complete agreement with that decision," the WCHA said in a statement.

Hakstol called Adam after the game to personally apologize, and issued a statement Sunday.

"I would like to sincerely apologize to our fans, players and entire program, as well as all college hockey fans, the WCHA and Don Adam for my actions during the second period of last night’s game versus the University of Minnesota," Hakstol’s statement said. "I’m disappointed in myself for allowing my emotions and frustrations to get the better of me. I pride myself in not allowing this type of thing to occur.

"Most importantly, I am a parent before I am a coach, and I understand the responsibility that we carry as coaches within the WCHA to young hockey fans and families everywhere. I have evaluated and feel terrible about my actions and can assure everyone that such a thing will never happen again."

2008-01-23Trailer_TrashPatriot LeagueNuisanceCrime Link1Bucknell men’s basketball coach Pat Flannery has been reprimanded and will be suspended for one game for arguing a call during Friday’s game against Holy Cross.

The Patriot League announced the suspension Monday. Flannery will miss Bucknell’s game Wednesday against Lafayette in Easton.

After Bucknell’s Todd O’Brien was called for a charge in the second half of the Holy Cross game, Flannery argued with officials, was assessed two technicals and then ejected.

Patriot League Executive Director Carolyn Schlie Femovich said Flannery violated the league’s code of conduct.

"This suspension is a direct result of unacceptable behavior as a coach during a basketball game," Femovich said. "The Patriot League requires the highest standards of sporting behavior of coaches, student-athletes and others associated with an athletic competition."

Flannery, in a school statement, said: "I deeply regret the incident that took place on Friday night. I’m sorry that my actions reflected poorly on Bucknell and the Patriot League and may have overshadowed the courageous performance by our players in a big victory over Holy Cross. They deserve all the credit for battling back to win that game under difficult circumstances."

Flannery also pledged to "maintain the high standards of sportsmanship expected by Bucknell and the Patriot League."
