Taurasi faces three drunk-driving related charges, including extreme DUI, for a July 2 incident in which she also was cited for speeding. The 27-year-old guard was cited hours after she scored 22 points in the Mercury’s 93-81 victory over the Seattle Storm.

2008-08-06Trailer_TrashRoyalsNuisanceCrime Link3Kansas City catcher Miguel Olivo and pitcher Zack Greinke have been suspended five games each for causing trouble in a weekend game with the Chicago White Sox.

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was suspended two games and Royals manager Trey Hillman was given one game Tuesday. All four penalties also included undisclosed fines.

Olivo and Greinke appealed their suspensions, which were to begin with Tuesday night’s game against Boston. They can continue to play until the appeal process is complete.

"We are appealing it because I think that is too much for me," Olivo said. "Their pitcher (wasn’t) suspended at all, nothing."

"I’m disappointed because I’m hurt. I got left hand hurt and my right hand. I know I’m going to get suspended, but not like for five days, maybe three or two games. I agree with that, but five games I think is a lot."

Guillen will sit out games Tuesday and Wednesday against Detroit. The White Sox began the day in a virtual tie with Minnesota for the AL Central lead.

"My ball club is going through a pretty tough time right now and I got to be with them 100 percent. I let my club down for two days," Guillen said. "This team can play without me, I believe in my coaches, I believe in the club. I don’t think this team will play any differently having me here or not."

Hillman will immediately serve his penalty.

"You’re always disappointed," Hillman said. "I don’t ever look forward to being away from the competition. It is their decision. I don’t have the advantage of the appeal process, so I’ve got to serve mine tonight."

Baseball disciplinarian Bob Watson issued the suspensions following Sunday’s game in Kansas City. Olivo was suspended four games at the beginning of this season after throwing a punch at the Mets’ Jose Reyes while playing for Florida last September.

The Royals were on their way to a 14-3 win when trouble began in the fifth inning.

Olivo already had two RBI when he was hit by a pitch from White Sox reliever D.J. Carrasco and charged the mound, starting a bench-clearing brawl.

Olivo, Carrasco and Guillen were ejected when order was restored. Watson penalized Guillen for making contact with umpire Tim Timmons during the dispute and for his postgame comments, in which the manager said, "this is my 20-something year in the big leagues and I still don’t understand what common sense they have when they make those decisions."

Both teams were warned against any retaliation. In the seventh, Greinke was ejected after hitting Nick Swisher with a pitch.

"I thought I might get suspended, but I wasn’t sure for how long," Greinke said. "Five days is a long time. I was surprised it was that for that long. Still everything is in the beginning stages. I’m not an expert on it."

Greinke said he not surprised Carrasco did not receive any punishment.

"Because at the time, teams weren’t warned," Greinke said. "He didn’t really try to fight Olivo really or anyone."
2008-08-05Trailer_TrashYankeesNuisanceCrime Link1Baltimore’s Daniel Cabrera and New York’s Edwar Ramirez were suspended and fined by the league for intentionally throwing at batters during a series between the teams earlier this week.

Cabrera was suspended six games and fined an undisclosed amount for throwing a pitch at Alex Rodriguez’s head in the bottom of the eighth inning on Tuesday night.

Ramirez, a reliever, was suspended for three games and fined an undisclosed amount for throwing at Kevin Millar’s head during the top of the seventh inning on Wednesday.

"That’s too much," Ramirez said before the Yankees played the Angels on Thursday night. "I didn’t do nothing yesterday. One pitch, one mistake ... I didn’t try to hit him."

Both pitchers were ejected from the respective games.

Ramirez has appealed the league’s decision. Cabrera hasn’t yet, and if he doesn’t his suspension will begin Friday night against the Seattle Mariners.
2008-07-27Trailer_TrashBullsNuisanceCrime Link1The Chicago Bulls No. 1 draft choice Derrick Rose pleaded guilty Monday to driving more than 40 mph over the speed limit on an Illinois highway back in April.

Kane County Associate Judge Robert J. Morrow ordered Rose to pay a $1,000 fine and attend traffic school, according to the county's state's attorney's office.

The misdemeanor speeding charge happened in April, when Rose was pulled over after the Illinois State Police clocked him driving 106 mph in a 65 mph zone on Interstate 88 in Kane County.

Gonzalez, a 2005 graduate of Del Oro High School in Loomis, was sentenced Monday on a misdemeanor battery charge. A jury convicted him on March 26 after a two-day trial.

He was also ordered to pay $650 in fines.

2008-07-01Trailer_TrashBillsNuisanceCrime Link1Bills running back Marshawn Lynch had his driver's license revoked in traffic court on Friday after saying he didn't know he hit someone while driving on a Buffalo street last month.

Administrative Law Judge Thomas Gagola found Lynch's behavior on May 31 "constituted a reckless disregard of human life or property." He also imposed the maximum $100 fine and $50 surcharge after Lynch pleaded guilty to failure to exercise due care toward a pedestrian.

Lynch, the Bills' first-round draft pick in 2007 out of California, was driving his 2008 Porsche Cayenne SUV in the city's bar district at 3:30 a.m. when he struck a 27-year-old Ontario woman and kept going.

"It was raining real hard, there was a dancing pedestrian in the middle of the street," the 22-year-old Lynch said before the hearing. "I slowed down to let her go and continued on my way home. I didn't know my car had hit anyone or anything."

Investigators believe the woman Lynch struck was near the woman he saw dancing.

A longer written statement issued by Lynch's attorney after the hearing said police officers later came to his house and removed his car and that Lynch "was in disbelief" when told it had been in an accident.

Attorney Michael Caffery called the revocation of Lynch's license for an unspecified length of time "a little harsh."

During the hearing, Police Officer Allan Kasprzak said the woman Lynch struck, Kimberly Shpeley, bruised a hip and required seven stitches for a cut on her thigh.

Lynch only had his New York driver's license one day, having received it Thursday after turning in his California license.

Lynch's guilty plea was part of a deal reached last week between his lawyer and Erie County prosecutors that allowed Lynch to avoid a criminal charge. Caffery said investigators found that Lynch did not intentionally leave the scene of an accident, pointing out that Lynch drove home and parked in his driveway.

"There was no intention on his part to hide his vehicle," Caffery said.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, in western New York for a sports symposium, said the league was monitoring the Lynch case. Under the NFL's personal conduct policy, players can be disciplined for "conduct that undermines or puts at risk the integrity and reputation of the NFL, NFL clubs or NFL players."

"From our standpoint," Goodell said, "we'll wait and see what the facts are and then we'll decide whether it's a violation or if it has any involvement in our personal conduct policy."
2008-06-06Trailer_TrashRockiesNuisanceCrime Link1Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp was suspended for four games and Colorado catcher Yorvit Torrealba was penalized three games Thursday following their tussle earlier this week.

Both players also were fined undisclosed amounts by Major League Baseball disciplinarian Bob Watson.

Kemp appealed his suspension, allowing him to play until a hearing is held. He was in the starting lineup Thursday night for the opener of a four-game series against the Chicago Cubs.

"That’s what they decided to do, so I have to respect that. But I feel it was just as much his fault as my fault," Kemp said. "I don’t feel that I should get more, but it’s not my decision. That’s why I’m appealing it. I didn’t know it was going to be that many games, but we’ll see what happens."

The Rockies were informed that Torrealba plans to appeal his suspension as well. The team was off Thursday before beginning a three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday night.

Kemp and Torrealba tangled Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium. Kemp struck out on a pitch in the dirt for the final out of the eighth inning, and the ball rolled a few feet to the right of Torrealba.

Torrealba brushed Kemp from behind before picking up the ball and tagging him lightly in the chest. Kemp shoved Torrealba, and the Rockies catcher retaliated by shoving Kemp in the face with both hands.

Kemp and Torrealba wrestled on the infield grass as both benches and bullpens emptied. Both players were ejected in the Rockies’ 3-0 win.

"I’m more concerned about the games than the fine," said Kemp, who declined to reveal the amount. "I’m letting my team down. I mean, four games, that’s a lot of games. I just don’t want to miss any games."

Kemp didn’t get a chance to talk to Watson directly, but acknowledged that baseball is trying to crack down on violence.

"I’m not embarrassed about the situation. It just happened," the outfielder said. "I’m sure everybody’s been in altercations before -- you just don’t see it on TV.

"I’m not going to say it’s part of the game. It was just two grown-ups that got into an altercation and things just got a little out of hand. You don’t really see too many fights in baseball. It’s not really that physical of a sport where people should be fighting. It’s not like hockey or any of the other sports, but it happens. We take this game seriously, and it is an emotional game."
2008-06-05Trailer_TrashBucsNuisanceCrime Link1***DUI was previously busted - these busts are for the NFL 2 game suspension & 1 game fine which was just handed down***

Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Jerramy Stevens was suspended without pay for the first two games of the season and fined an additional game check Wednesday for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.

The league also said any additional violations between now and the start of the season would increase the suspension to three games. Stevens also would face additional discipline for a new violation.

Stevens signed with the Bucs in April 2007 after being released by the Seattle Seahawks following his arrest in Scottsdale, Ariz., for investigation of driving under the influence and possession of marijuana.

The former first-round draft pick was convicted of DUI in September and served a one-game suspension and was fined an additional game check for the marijuana offense. The latest suspension stems from the DUI portion of the case.

Stevens spent the first five seasons of his career with the Seahawks. He had 18 receptions for 189 yards and four touchdowns for the Bucs in 2007. He became a free agent after the season and re-signed with Tampa Bay last week.
2008-05-31Trailer_TrashBullsNuisanceCrime Link1Chicago Bulls forward Joakim Noah accepted a deferred prosecution agreement Wednesday in his marijuana possession case, resulting in six months' probation and a $200 fine.

The former Florida star was charged with possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana and for having an open container of alcohol early Sunday in downtown Gainesville. As a first-time offender, he was eligible for the deferred prosecution agreement, the State Attorney's Office said.

The charges will be dropped in six months if Noah meets the terms of his probation.

Noah also must pay $206 in traffic fines for two citations he received Sunday on the University of Florida campus. Noah was ticketed for driving with a suspended license without knowledge and for not wearing a seat belt.

2008-05-26Trailer_TrashYankeesNuisanceCrime Link1New York Yankees pitcher LaTroy Hawkins was given a three-game suspension for allegedly throwing at a batter during a game against the Baltimore Orioles.

The suspension was to have begun Thursday but Hawkins has appealed the disciplinary action, which includes an undisclosed fine.

In the sixth inning of Tuesday’s game against Baltimore, pitches from Hawkins were far inside the plate and toward batter Luke Scott. The second pitch was high and inside -- about head level -- although Scott wasn’t hit.

The home plate umpire immediately ejected Hawkins from the game. Both benches cleared in the incident but no punches were thrown.

American League officials ruled Hawkins intentionally threw at Scott and issued the suspension and fine.

2008-04-20Trailer_TrashYankeesNuisanceCrime Link1New York Yankees reliever Kyle Farnsworth was suspended for three games and fined Saturday for throwing a fastball behind the neck of Boston slugger Manny Ramirez earlier in the week.

Farnsworth said he was "shocked" by the decision and would appeal the penalty, which was to start Saturday night against Baltimore. He will be eligible to pitch until a hearing is held.

"I can’t agree," he said. "We will appeal, and then we’ll go from there."

Manager Joe Girardi also expressed his shock at the ruling by Bob Watson, vice president of on-field operations for Major League Baseball. The amount of the fine was not disclosed.

"I am shocked and I don’t understand it. I disagree with it. It doesn’t make any sense to me," Girardi said, adding that there have been far worse incidents that have gone without penalty this season.

Ramirez hit two home runs Thursday night in Boston’s 7-5 win over New York. When he came up again in the seventh inning, Farnsworth threw a 97 mph pitch behind the star.

Ramirez dropped his bat, but never made a move toward the mound. Farnsworth wasn’t ejected and plate umpire Larry Vanover immediately warned both dugouts. Ramirez eventually grounded out and the Red Sox never retaliated.

"The ball just slipped," Farnsworth said. "I didn’t hit him. I’m not going to intentionally hit a guy in the head and maybe end his career.

"It wasn’t my intention to hit him. I don’t understand it. I didn’t hit him. No one was ejected. So I don’t know why he ruled the way he did."

A day before Farnsworth’s close pitch, Red Sox reliever David Aardsma hit Yankees star Alex Rodriguez with a pitch.

"We hit one of the best players and I guess they want to send a message and that’s what they did," Ramirez said after nearly getting hit. "They’ve got to back up their players and he did."

Farnsworth has been suspended twice before in his career for throwing at hitters, in 2003 for three games and in 2005 for five games. Asked if he thought that was taken into consideration by Watson in making his decision, Farnsworth said he didn’t think so.

No date was given for Farnsworth’s appeal to be heard.

"The sooner we get it done, the better," Farnsworth said.
