... HORRY COUNTY -- A former Coastal Carolina football player was arrested and charged Thursday with multiple felonies. Tyler Campbell, 24, was booked into J. Reuben Long Detention Center at 9:49 a.m. on charges of kidnapping, assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature and malicious injury to animals or personal property over $1,000 but less than $5,000, according to jail records. Details of the arrest, which was made by Horry County police, were not available. Campbell has not yet had a bond hearing and remains jailed. The 5-foot-7, 170-pound Campbell was a senior for the Chanticleers football team last fall, playing in nine games mostly as a special teams standout. He finished the season with 11 tackles. |

Also Tuesday, a Pirates player, Robert Mitchell, was arrested in Newark and charged with kidnapping, robbery, burglary and possession of a weapon, according to a law enforcement official in Essex County. Mitchell was accused along with another person of breaking into a house in South Orange, duct-taping eight people and stealing cash and personal items. The police have not identified the other person. |

Charleston police say a 19-year-old quarterback for The Citadel has been charged along with three others in connection with an armed robbery of a man at his home. The Post and Courier of Charleston reported that Miguel Starks was charged Saturday with armed robbery, first-degree burglary, kidnapping and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. Charleston police spokesman Charles Francis told the paper that former Citadel linebacker 22-year-old Reginald Anthony Rice faces the same charges as Starks. |

Chris Kearney, 20, veered off the road in the 200 block of North Columbia Street early Sunday, and his sport utility vehicle hit a wall before striking two female UNC students walking on the sidewalk, police said. The two women were taken to the hospital and had serious but non-life-threatening injuries, officials said. There was no word on their conditions Monday. Kearney was charged with two counts of inflicting personal injury, felony hit-and-run causing personal injury and possessing a fake ID and one count each of driving while impaired and consuming alcohol under the age of 21. His blood-alcohol reading registered 0.18, more than twice the 0.08 per se limit for intoxication in North Carolina. His parents flew in from Irvine, Calif., to attend his first court appearance Monday morning and bail him out of jail. He has withdrawn from school and will return home to California with them, said his attorney, Amos Tyndall. "They’re devastated. They’re very sad, very concerned about the two girls who were hurt. Their thoughts and prayers are with those girls and they’re wishing, obviously wishing, he had made better choices" Tyndall said. Kearney was the Atlantic Coast Conference 2007 Freshman Player of the Year. He ranks second on the team for singles and doubles victories and was ranked third nationally among doubles players last fall. |

Nelson, 19, of Cleveland, Ohio, was charged with marijuana possession, a serious misdemeanor, after police said they saw marijuana in plain view on Nelson’s dorm desk early Saturday. Joseph Okoh, 40, was arrested Friday and charged with one felony count of using a communications system to solicit a person under 15 years old with lascivious intent. He is being held without bond at the Central Virginia Regional Jail in Orange pending a bond hearing Friday. The Louisa County Sheriff’s Office said Okoh traveled from his home in Arlington for the purpose of engaging in sexual activity with a person he thought was a 13-year-old girl. The person was actually an undercover deputy. A spokeswoman for Howard said Okoh has been suspended from all university activities and duties pending completion of the investigation. |

A temporary restraining order was issued Monday requiring the star wide receiver to stay at least 500 feet from a woman who alleged he committed "battery causing serious injury" to her at her Florida home on Jan. 6. Moss denied the allegation by Rachelle Washington, which he called "this situation of extortion," and said he was "furious" about it. The restraining order was issued in the Broward County 17th Judicial Circuit of Florida. (Assault and Battery and Restraining order) Washington alleged Moss refused to allow her to seek medical treatment. "She has her own house. She has her own car," Moss said. "So how am I going to deny someone medical attention when you live by yourself and have your own vehicle?" (this is the "other felonies" bust. Pope, 18, was found unresponsive behind the wheel of a car that was stopped in a traffic lane in Moon, about 15 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, with its engine running and doors locked at 2:27 a.m. Friday, according to court documents. Pope awakened after officers repeatedly tried to rouse him, and the car then lurched into a police cruiser, authorities said. Officers broke the driver’s side window, shut off the engine, arrested Pope and took him to a hospital for tests. Pope then was taken to Allegheny County Jail, where he was arraigned and released on his own recognizance, authorities said. In addition to the charge of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, Pope was charged with reckless endangerment, underage drinking and a traffic offense. A preliminary hearing is scheduled Jan. 8. Family members reached by The Associated Press on Saturday declined comment. New Mexico State athletic director McKinley Boston said Saturday that Pope won’t play in Monday’s game against Alcorn State and is suspended indefinitely for violation of university and team rules. |
