Jeremy Mayfield tested positive again for methamphetamine, NASCAR said, igniting another round of denials from the driver, who angrily accused the sanctioning body of paying his stepmother to lie about his alleged past drug use.

The positive result from a July 6 random test was included in a U.S. District Court filing Wednesday that asked the federal judge who lifted Mayfield’s drug suspension to reinstate the ban. The filing included an affidavit from Mayfield’s stepmother, Lisa, who said she witnessed the driver using methamphetamine at least 30 times over seven years.

Fayetteville police say Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Matt Jones was arrested early Thursday on a felony drug charge after officers found him in a parked car, cutting up what was suspected to be cocaine.

A police report said officers approached the car and found Jones inside, using a credit card to chop up a white substance. Police said an officer drew his handgun after Jones did not immediately show his hands.

Police said they found a jar with possible marijuana residue inside the car and a plastic bag of what was likely cocaine. Officers say Jones admitted he had cocaine.

According to a report by the Florida Times-Union of Jacksonville on its Web site, police said 6 grams of the white substance later tested positive for cocaine.

Police say two others inside the car, Jared Hicks and Benjamin Cook, were also arrested on misdemeanor drug charges.

Jones, who is 25, was being held in the Washington County Detention Center on Thursday pending a court hearing, said Kelly Cantrell, a spokeswoman for the county’s sheriff’s office, according to the report.
2008-05-06IrvinSucksACCBig-TimeCrime Link20The toxicology report came back on deceased Georgia Tech pitcher Michael Hutts, and he died of an overdose of an opium-derived narcotic. A friend known to use heroin visited his apartment the night he died, so that appears to be the culprit.

As such, I am busting this as using hard drugs and a serious wrong-place-wrong-time, as we do not have a crime for suicide (purposeful or accidental).

ORANGE PARK, Fla. (AP) - Denver Broncos defensive tackle Marcus Thomas was arrested after police said they found cocaine and a handgun in a pickup truck during a traffic stop.

He was charged with possession of a controlled substance and released from jail Sunday after posting a $2,500 bond.

Thomas slipped to the fourth round of last year’s draft because of off-field problems. He had been considered a potential first-round pick.

Thomas and the driver were arrested early Saturday after police received a call from the Florida Highway Patrol asking them to look for a pickup with a driver who might be impaired.

The police report said both men denied any knowledge of the cocaine. Police also said a semiautomatic pistol was seen inside the glove compartment.

Thomas’ lawyer, Charles Truncale, said police found a small bag of what appeared to be a "trace amount" of cocaine and his client "did not possess it."

"Nor did he have any knowledge of it, until the stop of the vehicle," Truncale said. "That’s what happened. He is not guilty of the charge for which he has been arrested."

"The owner/operator of the vehicle has since admitted the cocaine was his and no cocaine was ever found on Marcus Thomas," the Broncos said in a statement, "Within hours of his release, Marcus had a test which confirmed that there was no cocaine in his system."

The team would not comment on the source of its information, club spokesman Patrick Smyth said.

Police Chief James Boivin said both men still face a possible felony charge because at the time of the arrest neither said he owned the cocaine. A call to the state attorney’s office in Green Cove Springs was not immediately returned.

Thomas was suspended most of his final college season at Florida in 2006. He had tested positive for drugs and violated curfew and his agreement to attend drug rehabilitation class.
