It seems like a day doesn't go by here at High Times CFT when there's not a charge somehow related to marijuana being faced by a college football player.

And today is no different.

The latest to find themselves in legal bong water are a pair of Arkansas defensive backs. According to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, David "Cheech" Gordon and Hunter "Chong" Miller were arrested Monday night and charged with possession of a controlled substance.

Here's the Democrat-Gazette's account of how the alleged dope duo were popped, with our emphasis added:

Miller and Gordon were observed by a police officer in a university parking lot lying in the back seat of a vehicle Monday evening. The police officer approached the vehicle and could spell a strong odor of burnt marijuana, according to a preliminary arrest report. A cloud of smoke rolled out of the vehicle when Miller opened the door and a plastic bag containing a "green leafy substance" was found inside the driver's side door panel, according to the report.

(Not that there's anything wrong with that, but "lying in the backseat of a vehicle"? Together?)

Authorities in Gainesville have charged Chicago Bulls forward and former Florida star Joakim Noah with possession of marijuana and having an open container of alcohol.

Gainesville police spokesman Sgt. Rick Roberts says Noah was arrested around 1:50 a.m. Sunday after an officer spotted him on a sidewalk holding a plastic cup containing an amber drink, a violation of city law. During a search at the station, officers found marijuana in his pocket.

Noah was released after signing a notice to appear before a judge -- standard procedure for such offenses. He could face up to 6 months in jail and a $500 fine for the marijuana charge.

Noah led the Gators to back-to-back national championships before being picked ninth overall in last June's draft by the Bulls.

2008-04-20Trailer_TrashChargersSmall-TimeCrime Link8Chargers inside linebacker Stephen Cooper was suspended for four games by the NFL on Tuesday for testing positive for a banned stimulant.

Cooper, who moved into the starting lineup last season and led the Chargers with 179 tackles, said in a statement released by the team that he took a stimulant that was recently added to the NFL’s list of prohibited substances.

"I regret that I mistakenly took a stimulant that I did not realize at the time was banned by the NFL," Cooper said. "I support the NFL’s anti-doping policies, and understand that I must serve a suspension even though the stimulant that I took was not used before any game and was not used to enhance my performance.

"I apologize to the NFL, my team, my coaches and to my fans, and I look forward to continuing to help the Chargers toward our goal of winning the Super Bowl in the upcoming season."

Neither Cooper nor his agent could immediately be reached for further comment.

While at Maine, Cooper admitted to possession of steroids after being found with about 1,000 pills in his duffel bag when the driver of an SUV he was riding in was stopped for speeding in 2002.

Cooper, who pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor drug charge, said at the time that he never took the steroids, but had been planning to use them to bulk up in hopes of making the NFL.

It’s the second time since 2006 a Chargers linebacker has been suspended for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. Star outside linebacker Shawne Merriman served a four-game suspension in 2006 after testing positive for steroids.

General manager A.J. Smith said the suspension was "very disappointing."

"Coop has embarrassed himself, his family and the Chargers," Smith told The Associated Press. "He made a mistake. Some people learn from their mistakes, others do not. I do believe Stephen Cooper will learn from his and in a positive way. Only time will tell."

Smith said he didn’t know what stimulant Cooper tested positive for.

Cooper’s suspension begins on Saturday, Aug. 30 following the Chargers’ final exhibition game. He is eligible to return to the active roster on Monday, Sept. 29 following the team’s Sunday game against the Oakland Raiders.

Cooper can participate in the team’s offseason program and in all preseason practices and games.

"Obviously we’re disappointed, just as I know Stephen is," coach Norv Turner said in a statement. "Coop made a mistake and now must deal with the consequences. It’s unfortunate, but we’ll deal with it and move on."

2008-01-23Trailer_TrashBillsSmall-TimeCrime Link3Buffalo Bills defensive end Anthony Hargrove was suspended without pay for all of next season Monday by the NFL after violating the league’s substance abuse policy a third time.

The violation was Hargrove’s second since August, when he was suspended without pay for the first four games of the regular season.

A third violation triggers an automatic one-year suspension, and Hargrove must apply to commissioner Roger Goodell for reinstatement.

The NFL did not disclose how Hargrove violated the policy. Violations can result from positive tests, failure to cooperate in the testing program or failing to comply with a treatment plan.

Hargrove’s agent, Philip Williams, was out of the country and not immediately available for comment.

The Bills declined comment beyond issuing an NFL release announcing the suspension, which came three weeks after Buffalo (7-9) completed its season.
